Cengiz: Sorry EDF & Monchi, but…
Cengiz Under says that while he is ‘really sorry’ to see Monchi and Eusebio Di Francesco leave Roma, ‘life is ruthless, football even more so.’
Cengiz was brought to Roma by Monchi in the summer of 2017, and the Turkey winger insists he is ‘happy’ to stay at the Olimpico after making the ‘right decision’ to sign in the first place.
“At Basaksehir I scored nine goals, almost all of them with my right foot,” he told DAZN.
“I don’t know why I can’t do it here. It hasn’t been destiny, but I’m happy to continue my career here. [Coming here] was the right decision.
“I always thought it was useful to look at great players, but I’ve been mostly focused on my own performances to work on mistakes I made.
“I’ve always watched David Silva, even if we don’t play in the same position. I really like his style, he’s inspirational.
“What I know with regards to my performances is that at Roma, I’ve grown a lot, both in an attacking and defensive sense.
“I have the right motivation to keep improving.”
The sporting director was sacked last month, along with Di Francesco, who gave the 21-year-old his big break…
“Monchi brought me here, I’m sorry to see him go,” he confessed.
“Di Francesco gave me advice that I’ll never forget for a lifetime. I always felt his confidence.
“Even when I didn’t play much, I felt he believed in me. Then I started playing and scoring.
“I really am sorry, but these are things that happen in football. Life is ruthless, football even more so.”
