Chiellini: 'Italy kept playing our football'

Giorgio Chiellini believesthe comeback win over Bosnia-Herzegovinais “an important step forward for Italy, because didn’t lose our heads and continued playing our football.”

Edin Dzeko had given Bosnia the half-time lead, but Lorenzo Insigne scored a sensational volley from a corner, then set up Marco Verratti’s winning strike.

“We perhaps ran into more difficulties than we were expecting in the first half, as they have players with such technique that they make you run around after them without seeing the ball,” Chiellini told Rai Sport.

“We improved after the break, and taking risks is all well and good in some situations, for example in the second half when we were chasing the game. It’s not acceptable when you’re not pressing them properly, lack organisation and let Bosnia pass it around you.

“In the second half, we did much better, closed down the spaces, stopped them coming forward and were more organised.

“I think this was a big step forward for the team. When we were trailing, we were able to turn it around with organisation, without trying to just go mad and allow nonsensical counter-attacks.

“Although we scored the winner at the 86thminute, we continued playing our football, didn’t lose our heads and played our game to the end.”
