Doctor: 'Zaniolo could make Euro 2020'

Pier Paolo Mariani, the doctor who operated on Nicolo Zaniolo’s knee, says the Roma player can recover ahead of Euro 2020.

Zaniolo was stretchered off in the 36thminute against Juventus at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday evening, and it was later confirmed that he had ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament and damaged the meniscus.

On Monday he went under the knife to reconstruct part of the damaged knee, and isexpected to be out of action for five to six months.

Mariani spoke to Il Corriere dello Sport about Zaniolo’s injury, and relayed that he could make Euro 2020.

“There were no particular difficulties during the operation. Now the boy must begin his rehabilitation process, which Roma will provide,” said Mariani.

“The club has had many similar injuries in recent years, there will be no problems.

“He could come back before the start of the European Championships, but no coach fills a gap in his squad list with a question mark, a presence that could be an unknown quantity.”

Mariani then cited the cases of Napoli’s Lorenzo Insigne and current Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger, who both recovered from similar injuries within four months.
