Gennaro Gattuso will be appointed Napoli coach within hours, after the club announced that his mentorCarlo Ancelotti had been sacked.
The decision had been in the air for at least a week and was only stalled until now because they wanted to play the final Champions League group game.
Just hours after a 4-0 victory over Genk that sent them through to the Round of 16, Ancelotti met with President Aurelio De Laurentiis at the Hotel Vesuvio and was told of his dismissal.
A formal announcement was then released by the club, after Ancelotti assured media he would not resign.
Now Gattuso is set to be appointed on Wednesday morning.
According to various reports, Gattuso has already agreed a contract to June 2021.
He will earn €1.5m for the next six months and €3m per season after that.
Gattuso has been out of work since walking away from Milan on May 28, having missed out on Champions League qualification by one point.
He terminated the contract by mutual consent, giving up his remaining salary to ensure his staff would still be paid.
Gattuso had been linked with several roles over the last few months, including Fiorentina, Genoa and Sampdoria, but turned them all down to wait for the right opportunity.
He comes to Napoli and replaces mentor Ancelotti, having been his midfielder at Milan for 322 competitive matches.
‘Rino’ had 82 games on the Milan bench, taking over as caretaker from Vincenzo Montella in November 2017.
Before that, his only management roles were short-lived experiences at FC Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete, Pisa and the Milan youth team.
