A fantastic Federico Chiesa solo effort has given Fiorentina the half-time lead over Atalanta, but the visitors had more chances.
These teams had met only last month, the Viola knocking Atalanta out of the Coppa Italia in an ill-tempered clash that saw coach Gian Piero Gasperini insulted constantly by the home fans.
Gaetano Castrovilli returned two weeks after a head injury, while Nikola Milenkovic and Martin Caceres bans had expired, but Franck Ribery was still injured. Marten De Roon was suspended for the visitors.
Bartlomiej Dragowski made a double save at the near post, first on Josip Ilicic, then Timothy Castagne’s follow-up. Mario Pasalic missed a huge chance from 10 yards, side-footing wide when relatively undisturbed.
Pierluigi Gollini had to rush off his line and use his body to parry from Patrick Cutrone, sent through by Federico Chiesa’s pass, while Dalbert flung himself in the way of Duvan Zapata to block the shot.
Fiorentina took the lead with a spectacular Chiesa solo effort, as he controlled a bouncing ball with one boot, smashed it in from 25 metres on the half-volley with the other, beating Gollini into the near bottom corner.
Igor made a decisive block on Pasalic, send clear by Robin Gosens, while Chiesa nutmegged Jose Luis Palomino at the by-line.
