The Nerazzurri were smarting after a 3-2 Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund, where they also lost Matteo Politano to injury, joining Alexis Sanchez, Kwadwo Asamoah, Roberto Gagliardini and Stefano Sensi, while Danilo D’Ambrosio was only fit for the bench. Verona were in ninth place with the joint best defensive record in Serie A, alongside Juventus, but Marash Kumbulla, Salvatore Bocchetti, Miguel Veloso and Daniel Bessa missed out, so Inter-owned Eddie Salcedo started upfront.

Cristiano Biraghi’s free kick was fingertipped out from under the bar, while Samir Handanovic smothered a Salcedo effort.

Verona went on the counter-attack with three men, the through ball sending Mattia Zaccagni through and his ankle was caught by on-rushing Handanovic for a penalty. Valerio Verre converted with a fairly central but powerful attempt to give Verona the lead.

Lautaro Martinez’s effort was deflected over by Rrahmani, while Romelu Lukaku first tested Marco Silvestri from close range, then his angled drive skimmed the far post and Marcelo Brozovic’s looping shot clipped the crossbar.

Stefan de Vrij’s powerful strike from distance was punched away, but Inter thought they’d equalised on 44 minutes. It was a well-worked team move, eventually the ball rolled across for Matias Vecino at the back post and Silvestri somehow managed to push it off the line from point-blank range. Only goal-line technology confirmed it had not gone over entirely.
