Inzaghi: 'Lazio had the chances'

Simone Inzaghi feels Lazio should’ve had a penalty against Celtic, but concedes their own mistakes proved decisive. “This group was well within our reach.”

In all except the win over Rennes, the Aquile took the lead only to lose 2-1, paying for wasted opportunities in attack and howlers in defence.

“We should’ve received a penalty and the fact it wasn’t awarded is astonishing. It would’ve allowed us to go back in front,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“I liked the spirit of the team overall, but we should’ve scored a second goal when we had the many chances and be more determined. If you create that many opportunities, one goal just isn’t enough.

“We go home with zero points from this match and are probably out of Europe. It has to also be said, we did our fair share to trip ourselves up over the two games with Celtic, who are a quality side and to their credit never give up.”

Joaquin Correa, Stefan Radu and Adam Marusic were out injured, while Felipe Caicedo and Lucas Leiva looked a long way off being fully fit.

“They had to rush their recovery, as Danilo Cataldi was suspended. We were down to the bare bones. I think we nonetheless put in a good performance.

“There is a lot of regret, because a group with Celtic, Cluj and Rennes was well within our reach.”
