Walter Mazzarri took the blame after10-man Torino lost 2-1 to SPAL. “I probably shouldn’t have introduced another striker, but gone for damage limitation instead.”
It was 1-1 when Gleison Bremer was sent off on 55 minutes, but Mazzarri threw on Simone Zaza and they were caught out by an Andrea Petagna header.
“It was a difficult game and we didn’t play our usual brand of sharp football, as SPAL were very strong physically and had nothing to lose,” said the coach in his press conference.
“In the second half, despite being a man down, we continued to attack, but they were the ones who scored the goal. When it was 10 against 11, I probably shouldn’t have introduced another striker, but gone for damage limitation instead.
“The lads gave everything they had. Just like last week with Verona, we were not lucky. Unfortunately, that’s just how things are going at the moment.”
This time Torino threw away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1, whereas at Verona they were 3-0 up only to draw 3-3.
“It depends on the balance of the team. I thought we could win this, but we didn’t finish off our chances and SPAL did. We were technically down to 10 men for the equaliser too, because Cristian Ansaldi was down injured in midfield.”
