Claudio Ranieri has assured that he is doing everything to get Roma playing ‘like a team’ again. “I work 25 hours a day, thinking how I can help…”
Ranieri’s winning start back at Roma was quickly overshadowed by defeats to SPAL and Napoli, the latter of whom thrashed the Giallorossi 4-1 at the Olimpico.
Next up for the Lupi are Fiorentina, who put seven past them in the Coppa Italia earlier in the season.
“I’ve had Cengiz and Pellegrini available for a short time,” he said at a Press conference.
“I’ll have to be a pharmacist and figure out who can play from the start and who can’t. I’m available, but only in quotation marks…
“I hope our defeats serve as the fuel that makes us react. We have to project that. In Florence we conceded goals with long balls over the top, and they do that very well.
“They often retrace this model, regardless of who they play. We must be careful so as not to give them depth.
“N’Zonzi and De Rossi can slot in together, although it’s true that we don’t have a ballwinner.
“I’m convinced that we need individuals like Cengiz and Perotti, but physical condition must be taken into account, since we’re playing three games a week.
“I have to assess who can play for 30 minutes, 45 minutes, who needs longer recovery. Dzeko played with a hip problem against Napoli, we’ll see how he is.
“I work 25 hours a day, thinking how I can help this team. It’s not easy but I’m trying. I’ll assess everything properly: the lads, our formation and opponents.”
“I don’t know who will play in goal, but we’ll see. I’ll choose between today and tomorrow.”
Francesco Totti promised changes if he was given a bigger role by Roma, while there is talk that Daniele De Rossi could possibly succeed Ranieri…
“Daniele will think over what he’ll do after he stops playing,” continued the 67-year-old.
“Francesco has already taken on an important role. He retired a-year-and-a-half ago and he’s in harmony with the club.
“For me he’s an important point of reference and he is for the players and the club. They’ll decide what the best role for him is.
“I haven’t heard from Pallotta. This team aren’t playing like a team. That was the difference between us and Napoli. It stems from a lack of confidence.
“Now I want men who know how to react to adversity. It’s too easy to react when things are going well.
“I’ve used Kluivert like I did Zaniolo when he was fit. When things go well, any player you put in works well.
“When things go like they are, they also need experienced players who can guide the others.
“I’m thinking about every possibility, but for me to think properly I have to see how the lads are in training today.”
Finally, the former Inter, Juventus and Leicester City boss was asked whether he would let fans watch the team train at Trigoria.
“The fans have realised that the team need them,” he concluded.
“The Curva Sud supported the team against Napoli all the way, but the fans now want to see a reaction. Only then will they drag us from behind.”
