Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has confirmed that he wants to hold on to Gonzalo Higuain, but ‘it depends on the club and Juventus.’
Higuain joined Chelsea on loan from Juve in January and, despite scoring just three goals against relegation fodder, has established himself as Chelsea’s first-choice striker.
However, the Blues’ transfer ban could scupper their ability to keep the former Milan hitman beyond this summer, with a hearing scheduled for next Thursday.
“Yes of course, but it depends on the club, it depends on Juventus,” replied Sarri when asked whether he wanted to retain the 31-year-old.
“It’s not clear the situation at the moment. I think he needs time to improve his physical condition and time to be suitable for the Premier League. I think he is able to do it.
“He has to improve physically, mentally, but I think also he will be able to be very useful for us in the last part of the season.”
The former Napoli Coach then compared the Argentine’s early struggles to those suffered by Luis Suarez, who netted just four times in his first three months at Liverpool.
“You know very well that it’s not easy in the first months to play in the Premier League,” he added.
“It was a problem also for Suarez in the first season at Liverpool. He scored only four goals.
“In the second season he scored 17 goals, so it’s not easy, especially for a striker, to play immediately well in the Premier League.”
