Serie A suspended next week?

Serie A will continue behind closed doors for this weekend, but an emergency summit has been called for Tuesday to decide whether all football will be suspended during the Coronavirus outbreak, as players threaten a strike.

This morning’s game betweenParma and SPAL did eventually go aheadwith a 75-minute delay after intensive negotiations blocked the teams within minutes of kick-off.

Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora joined Players’ Association President Damiano Tommasi incalling publicly for the football tournaments to be suspendedin Italy during the Coronavirus outbreak.

However, the Lega Serie A pointed out that the latest Government decree – updated at 2am last night – stated professional games could continue behind closed doors.

With that in mind, the all-clear was given for this weekend’s fixtures, but the situation will be discussed all over again in the emergency meeting on Tuesday in Rome.

La Gazzetta dello Sport claims the Players’ Association (AIC) are threatening to go on strike from next week if their health is not taken into consideration.

The lockdown on the entire Lombardy region and 11-14 other provinces will run to April 3 in a bid to slow the spread of the Coronavirus.

There have been over 5,000 positive tests in Italy, and 233 deaths, but those figures are bound to climb again.

It is increasingly likely the Serie A season will be suspended next week.
