UEFA has officially postponed the Champions League and Europa League Finals as the 2020 Olympic Games look set to be held next year.
In a statement, UEFA also confirmed the Women’s Champions League Final would be put off until further notice.
Europe’s three major club Finals were scheduled to take place in May, but the outbreak of coronavirus on the continent has forced the governing body’s hand.
Italy is the country with the world’s most deaths from COVID-19 (6,077), whereas Spain rank third, France fifth and the UK seventh.
Meanwhile, International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound has told USA Today that the Tokyo Olympics will be postponed until 2021.
The competition is due to run between July 24 and August 9 this year, but Canada and Australia have already pulled out over safety concerns, with Great Britain set to follow.
“On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided,” said Pound.
“The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know.”
